2012 kia soul review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New engine makes compact wagon quicker yet more economical. introductionthe 2012 kia soul boasts new engines and fresh styling. Their goal with the soul is to stand out in a sea of sameness, though the basic shape goes some way to that end.  kia makes no pretenses about what the soul is: a car. It's not a compact utility, aka cute-ute, suv, crossover or van. Two new engines are the same size as their predecessors but deliver more horsepower: 138 hp for the 1. 6-liter (up from 122) and 164 hp for the 2. 0-liter (up from 142). New transmissions help improve mileage by 1-4 mpg whether automatic or manual, to 27/35 mpg for the 1. 6-liter and 26/34 mpg for the 2. 0-liter.  pricing for the soul has increased because of the new engines and transmissions and we think the upgrades worth it. The base soul uses the 1. 6-liter engine with manual transmission; an automatic adds $1,800 because other equipment is included. The lines are smooth and stylish, for a box, and the interior is notably clean and functional. The sport model has been dropped for 2012 but this leaves no hole in the lineup. lineupthe 2012 kia soul comes in three models: soul, soul+ (pronounced soul plus), and soul! The primary option is a premium package 2,500) with navigation, xm traffic, leather seat trim, heated front seats, climate control, and push-button start/smart key.  safety equipment on all models includes six airbags, active front headrests, latch seating system, electronic stability control, antilock brakes, and a tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe kia soul looks like it's wearing a pair of wraparound sunglasses. Because the rear windows are narrower than the front windows, there appears to be a downward rearward slope to the roof, but it's an illusion achieved by the rising beltline below the windows. There's a final and small third side window, an upside-down wedge to complete the shape.  bold chiseled wheel arches give the soul strength. The corners are nicely rounded, erasing the hard corners of a box. The grille is small and tidy, the soul's mouth no bigger than needed to suck in air for the engine, and the new bumper look is called tusk in-house. The front lighting elements are new and remain stylish, even moreso on the soul! Model that includes led running lamps and projector headlamps.  a black horizontal ding strip on the doors doesn't do much for cleanliness, but adds to the strong straight-line styling and it serves a function. The 16- and 18-inch alloy wheels are larger than often available in this size and class of car.  big vertical taillamps climb the rear pillars and project a feeling of safety. With the wraparound look for 2012 it's easy to draw a relation between the lights and the ears of a hamster like those in soul commercials. The liftgate and rear window are clean and smooth (and darkly cool when tinted), with an indented handle under a kia oval logo and a stylish chrome soul badge off to the side. All get the tusk bumper design, and the soul! It seems a little out of place when listening to talk radio, however. It's amusing in traffic jams.  the front bucket seats are comfortable, good for long trips, and the interior vinyl and cloth trim is fine. There are bottle holders in the front door pockets plus cupholders in the console with its own deep compartment, a huge two-level glovebox, map nets on the front seatbacks, a trap-door compartment on the dash (that's molded so things don't slide around), and grab handles over every door. There are auxiliary audio, ipod, and usb port connections, and two 12-volt outlets.  it has a nice steering wheel, with the usual standard controls the same colors as most cell phones. The three-ring instrument panel looks clean and uses an eave so the gauges are readable in the sun. The new center stack is modest with business-like knobs and buttons, changed primarily to accommodate the revised shifter and uvo/microsoft entertainment system that includes a rear camera. Air conditioning proved very effective.  the front seats offer plenty of room, including a full hand space over the head of six-plus-footers. The 60/40 rear seats drop flat in a heartbeat. There's an excellent compartment under the trunk floor, and below that a space-saver spare tire. We drove souls with the 2. 0-liter engine and 6-speed automatics primarily. We didn't get any seat time in the base model with the 1. 6-liter engine but given that it's almost as powerful as last year's 2-liter, the car is no heavier, and the transmissions now have more gears, fewer people should feel the need to step up to the + or ! For mechanical reasons.  both engines get direct injection for 2012, adding high-end power without using any more fuel most of the time. The 2. 0-liter engine makes 164 horsepower at 6500 rpm with a good 148 pound feet of torque peaking at a fairly high 4800 rpm. This is more than adequate in a 2,700-pound car and the soul can keep up with traffic easily; many v8-powered full-size suvs aren't demonstrably quicker. We found nothing to suggest the six-speed manual shifter and clutch aren't at least as good as the outgoing five-speed; choosing the automatic over it would most likely be due to packaging and option limitations with the manual.  following the 2012's debut kia plans to offer an option on automatics of isg. We sampled this in 1. 6-liter kia rio models and found it works as advertised, the first time it functioned my driver didn't even notice. No all-wheel drive system is offered nor is it needed. According to the government, the 2012 accent's interior volume puts it in the larger compact class.  the 2012 accent is longer in wheelbase and overall length than most of the competition, which means more room inside for people and cargo, and a smoother ride.  we found the accent very easy to drive. It's responsive but not quick, smooth by subcompact standards but not luxurious. Everything in the cabin is intuitive and easy to operate. It's an attractive design and the materials look nice.  the 2012 accent looks sportier and more modern than last year's version. The 2012 accent features hyundai's new design theme shared with sonata and elantra models.  for 2012, the body was reshaped with more flowing lines and more sculpted sheetmetal. The 2012 accent looks like a smaller version of the new elantra. The accent's new body shape carries a low coefficient of drag, 0. 30, which helps with wind noise and fuel mileage. The designers chose to go with body color everywhere, from bumpers to mirrors to handles, with black accents and design elements, so there is almost no chrome trim on the new car beyond the grille bar. The engine is rated at 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. The new engine is 40 pounds lighter than the previous engine. Like the other cars in this class, the accent uses front-wheel drive.  the 2012 accent comes with a choice of 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed automatic. On manual-transmission models, there is an ecoshift indicator between the instrument pods to indicate the proper gear for all driving conditions. We liked the with the 6-speed manual but didn't care for the indicator as we think we know the proper gear better than the car does. The clutch pedal was light and easy to operate. The 2012 accent has a far more modern interior than the previous model, with brushed metal accents on the doors, steering wheel and center console, white-on-black instrumentation with red needles, and a multi-function steering wheel. The elements have been redesigned for more room, more storage spaces.  sporty bucket seats feature superior cushions and bolsters. We found the seats comfortably supportive without being intrusive. Outward vision is excellent. The instrument panel, center stack, vents, switches and controls have all been redone for the 2012 accent models and it's all easy to look at and operate. The instrument package contains the usual two round gauges with digital readouts and indicators between the deeply tunneled clusters and is bathed in ice blue light at night.  the three-spoke steering wheel has a thick rim and a thickly padded hub. Lower models have urethane-covered steering wheels, upper models have leather-wrapped wheels with convenient switches for the sound system on the left, cruise control system on the right, and telephone on the lower left.  as for storage, the rated cargo capacity of the hyundai accent is 21. 2 cubic feet behind the folding second-row bench seat, and 47. 5 cubic feet with the second seat folded flat. Door and console storage is generous, and the new accent has a sliding console armrest, unusual in this class.  in the center binnacle, there is a usb port, an aux port, and the two combine to make a port for an ipod cable, a very clever arrangement. The new engine is smooth and quiet, and runs at about 2200 rpm at 70 mph in sixth gear, and about 4400 rpm at 100 mph. The thrifty, gutty little gamma engine is surrounded by helpers like electric power steering, low-rolling-resistance tires, lighter elements throughout the engine bay and the rest of the vehicle.  it all adds up to accent's 28/37 mpg epa mileage rating city/highway.  the 6-speed automatic transmission performed quickly and quietly.  the 6-speed manual gearbox is easy to shift and the clutch pedal was light and easy to operate. Some models include an ecoshift indicator between the instrument pods to indicate the proper gear for all driving conditions. We did not care for this and generally find shift lights distracting.  going down the road, the accent is far smoother and quieter than we were expecting it to be. A more-rigid chassis, stronger steel, more and better sound insulation and better door seals show in the car's quiet highway behavior.  we found the accent responds relatively quickly, has good tracking, relatively quick response, and good feel on center. Bump, rut and pothole damping is very good. Roll control on twisty mountain and desert roads was very good, and the car stayed put pretty well in hard corners. It's one of the lightest cars in its class at less than 2500 pounds, so it responds quickly to inputs.  the all-disc anti-lock braking system (abs) is rare in the subcompact class, and the accent's stopping performance was excellent. summarythe all-new hyundai accent a much better car than the. 2012 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, next-generation models are smooth and quiet. introductiontotally redesigned, the 2012 ford focus looks, feels, and smells like the future. It makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in the compact car class, a crowded and competitive field full of good cars with base prices in the $16,000-$17,000 range: volkswagen jetta, chevrolet cruze, honda civic, toyota corolla, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte.  but the focus is a mixed bag of function. The new 2. 0-liter engine is super smooth, but the new 6-speed automatic transmission shifts at quirky times. The fabric seats are super, the interior materials excellent and the wraparound cockpit cozy, but there isn't much rear legroom.  focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. It's lower, longer and wider. The new focus hatchback model is especially aerodynamic looking. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission. The engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque, an increase over last year's engine. It's plenty powerful, but mostly, it's extremely smooth. That's what a driver will feel: 'man, this car is smoooth.'  we observed fuel economy in the mid-20s when we were driving the focus. Fuel economy figures from the u. Federal government were not available when this was written.  there's excellent legroom in front, but compared to the previous focus, ford has somehow lost 2. 9 inches of legroom in the rear, despite stretching the length of the car by 3. 5 inches. The importance of rear legroom appears to have been discounted here.  interior noise was definitely not discounted, however. The focus is a compact car with the nvh qualities of a full-size car. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with sound insulation. Powertrain noise has also been reduced, by attentive engineering of the new engine, transmission, and chassis.  myford touch powered by sync is the connectivity system that ford is touting with its new cars. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it is designed that way, but that doesn't mean it works that way. We struggled with it. And we think all this technology can distract drivers from the important task of driving.  the gauges that are in front of the driver's eyes are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. The focus ride is good, with a suspension that's on the soft side, which doesn't help precise turning. We also drove a focus se with the 5-speed manual transmission and sport-tuned suspension. Ah, relief. lineupthe 2012 ford focus comes in sedan and hatchback versions. All use a redesigned 2. 0-liter engine with the latest technology of variable twin camshaft valve timing and direct fuel injection. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, 6-speed automatic optional, with selectshift manual mode an option to the optional transmission.  focus s sedan 16,270) is well equipped with cloth upholstery, climate control with air filtration, power door locks and front windows, full center console, 110-watt 4-speaker am/fm/cd3/mp3 sound system, fold-flat rear seat, tilt-telescoping steering wheel, 15-inch steel wheels, halogen headlamps, and black grille, mirrors and door handles. Other cars such as the new chevrolet cruze are doing it, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford in their best metaphor yet.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps are nice and safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the all-new focus chassis is 30 percent stiffer. It uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorford has been very ambitious the last few years, engineering-wise, and it shows. It shows in the interior of the focus. It's as if they took everything on their to-do list, and stuffed it in the cockpit. It's as busy as they are.  but ambition is good. Because ford went all-out with the new focus interior, there are some great things, starting with the standard seats in sturdy fabric, and the leather-like seats in the sel. Too bad the new chevrolet cruze doesn't have seats like the focus; if its interior matched its great handling and engine, there might be a good gm-ford battle in an important segment. Oh, it's good anyhow.  the word cockpit when used with a car is an awkward fit. But not with the focus. That was the way it was designed, to feel like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, geeks will love it, drivin' down the highway feelin' like a pilot, all those switches right nearby, led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors to suit his or her mood, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the centerstack, displays to set and adjust with dials and buttons, readouts to read and scroll through, maps to follow, touch-screens to touch, voi. The 2009 honda civic sedan presents a bolder face to the world, thanks mainly to a new front bumper cover. Where the previous bumper looked solid and heavy, with a single, subtle horizontal opening at the center, the new design incorporates a taller, more trapezoidal center opening with secondary scoop-like openings on either side. A grid-like insert in the center opening contrasts with a kind of cyclone-fence theme in the side scoops. These changes break up some of the visual mass of the bumper. The upper grille opening is also more angular than before, which goes well with the changes below. As before, a bright horizontal bar, with a prominent honda h in the middle, dominates the upper grille. Slender headlamp assemblies still angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. Revisions to the headlights are more subtle, consisting only of where and how the color seems to show through the existing lenses. Around back, a bright chrome bar now connects the taillights just above the indentation for the license plate.  the coupe sports a new look for 2009, also. Gone is the delicate, two-tiered upper grille insert, leaving just the honda logo centered in a oval-themed black mesh. The trapezoidal opening below has been flipped, so it's now wider at the top than the bottom, and the scoops to either side are drawn out wider and more horizontal, divided midway by a horizontal strut.  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the cab-forward design concept to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees; the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees.  the sail panel (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model. The coupe's forms an acute angle with the horizontal deck surface, emphasizing the two-door body style; while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and high, chunky tail end add perceived mass to a tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top.  on the 2009 si sedan, the grille bar is black instead of chrome. On both coupes and sedans an si badge tucks into the grille's lower left side, and oval fog lights are set into the bumper's outboard openings. An i-vtec label appears just forward of the rear wheel well; on the si sedan it's placed low on the rear door. An interestingly shaped rear spoiler wraps over the outboard edges of the sedan's trunk lid; on the coupe, the spoiler is free-standing. Both sedan and coupe roll on their own unique alloy wheels. The hybrid, in contrast, is understated, with just a small hybrid badge under the right rear taillight. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high-grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  many of the fabrics in the civic's.
